Electric Bikes vs. Regular Bikes

Electric Bikes vs. Regular Bikes

There are an estimated 1 billion+ bikes in the world. A bicycle is the perfect method of transportation for many people. This includes those who don’t qualify for a driver’s license, can’t afford a car, or don’t have access to public transportation. A bike is convenient, economical, environmentally-friendly, and simple to operate. It also provides exercise and encourages healthy lifestyles. But what about electric bikes? Since a regular bike is already so great, should you even bother upgrading to an electric one? What exactly is the difference? In this article, we will explore the differences and similarities between an eBike and a traditional bicycle. Then you can decide if an electric bike is right for you.

Appearance

At first glance, a traditional bike and an eBike look almost identical. This is because the frame and mechanics for both are essentially the same. Electric bikes and normal bikes use similar wheels, handlebars, pedals, and brakes. The biggest difference is the eBike’s electrical drive system. Take a close look and you’ll see a motor, battery, and sometimes a display screen. This is the only thing that separates an electric bike from a regular one.

Riding Experience

If you’ve never ridden an electric bicycle, you’re probably curious about how it rides. Will it feel different? Does it require additional skill to maneuver? The truth is, if you can ride a normal bicycle, you won’t have any trouble with an eBike. Since most of the mechanisms and components are the same, it won’t feel significantly different. What you will notice is that it’s easier to pedal. The motor is designed to assist your pedaling, making the ride feel smoother and less strenuous. This is especially useful for long distance or uphill cycling.

Your ride experience also depends on the pedal-assist level that you choose. The higher the level, the easier the ride. Keep in mind that max levels will drain your battery faster. So to get the most of your battery life, set the eBike to the lowest level that you feel comfortable at.

Speed

The average cyclist can go 10-15mph on a regular bike while professionals can reach 20-25mph. How do electric bicycles compare? Contrary to popular belief, electric bikes aren’t intended for high speeds. They simply assist your pedaling to make the ride feel easier. This can help a novice rider achieve pro-level speeds. Depending on the class and model, an eBike can help you reach 20-28mph. After you reach these speeds, the motor ceases and you’ll have to rely on your own strength to go any faster.

Maintenance

As mentioned before, most electric bike parts are the same as normal bike parts. You can expect comparable maintenance and repairs for both. The only additional maintenance required for an eBike is the battery. It’s important to practice proper battery use methods. This includes keeping it charged between 30-80%, balancing the cells occasionally, and storing it in dry, temperate areas. Since lithium ion batteries degrade over time, you’ll also need to eventually replace it.

Though we don’t expect you to have problems with the motor or electrical components, it is possible that they’ll malfunction. This can happen if you get into an accident or expose the eBike to extreme temperatures or weather conditions. In this case, you’ll need to take your electric bike to an eBike shop for repairs.

Regulations

In California, most rules are the same for both normal bikes and electric bikes. You don’t need any special license, registration, or motor vehicle insurance. You do need to follow the rules of the road and wear a helmet if you’re under 18. Most eBikes can share bike lanes, paths and trails with regular bikes (as long as there are no specific signs to prohibit it). Class 3 eBikes, however, do have additional laws. Since these bikes can reach 28mph, they have an age restriction of 16+ and cannot hold extra passengers. Class 3 eBikes are also prohibited on regular bike paths and trails.

Should You Buy an Electric Bike or a Regular Bike?

Beginner cyclists on a tight budget should probably start with a traditional bike. However, if you can afford to spend a little extra, an eBike is totally worth the buy. You can achieve greater range, steeper hills, and faster speeds than with a normal bike. And since they’re fun and easy to ride, you may even find yourself riding more often.
